Description
This arrangement for voice, violin, and piano was commissioned by Salonnières and included on their albums Salonnières and Home: Sacred American Songs.
A personal note: when we were children, my father would take out his guitar and sing this song to us night after night. The arrangement by J.A.C. Redford was his favorite, and we listened to it for years. As an adult, this became the first arrangement I composed for Salonnières, modeled closely on Redford’s. I later arranged it again for violin solo and piano so that my mother and I could play it at my father’s funeral. Not long afterward, I had the privilege of speaking with Redford and sharing what his arrangement has meant to me and to my family. It was an honor to hear him speak so generously and lovingly about music, his own family, and the ways they intertwine.
The piece is now available in four different voice registers and with viola and cello transcriptions of the violin part included, making it performable for many more musicians.
A flex string duet version of this piece is also available.
