Description
This arrangement for soprano, violin, and piano was commissioned by Salonnières as part of their album Home: Sacred American Songs. I always loved hearing this as a gospel song, so it was exciting to recreate it in a more classical style that fit Salonnières, and then to restructure it for instrumental duet.
The music for two phrases of the text, “on the sparrow” and “I know He watches me,” became the primary motives for the work. It’s always fun to watch performers and audience alike find all the different ways those motives are tucked into the texture, hidden in between all the sounds of fluttering bird wings.
