Description
The pink Amazon river dolphin, or boto, is steeped in Amazonian myths. It’s believed to shape-shift into charming, beautiful human form at night, bringing good luck (according to some folktales) or luring people into the river (according to others). Killing a boto brings bad luck, and encountering one predicts future events. Its pink color is sometimes described as a flirtatious blush.
In this piece, bow lifts, pizzicato, hemiolas, and mixed meters depicting the dolphin’s playfulness. For violin and viola, very little shifting is required beyond a short passage that stays firmly in 4th position. Viola and cello editions each include brief forays into treble and tenor clef. Programs beautifully on recitals alongside The Banshee and The Kappa!
Piano accompaniment track for violin players is available here on Jennie’s YouTube channel.
