Description
This obligato was written for violin to enhance performance of the carol with voice and piano, such as the widely-used G. Schirmer editions published under the title “Cantique de Noël.” When performed with this edition, the only change needed is the piano optionally dropping a few notes in the interludes between verses to avoid doubling. This obligato is available in four keys (Eb, Db, C, and Bb) to correspond with the keys available from Schirmer, and as of 2025 is also available in all 4 keys transcribed for viola and cello.
Resourceful players are welcome to adapt this obligato to any arrangement or instrumentation they would like! The part is designed to help each verse to build upon the previous, giving what can sometimes be a rather repetitive three verses extra growth and momentum.
